Irish Soda Bread

St. Patrick’s Day calls for this Irish Soda Bread! Soft, buttery, sweet and so good! It requires no yeast, no rising and will leave your kitchen smelling like an Irish Bakery! So good!

We make this bread every year for St. Patrick’s day! It’s like our little tradition (along with wearing green).

If you’ve never had Irish Soda Bread before, you are in for a treat! It’s really unique in it’s texture and flavor! The first time we tried it was from our local grocery store. It was good, but once we made it at home, it wasn’t even comparable! We think you all are going to love it!

One of the best things about this bread is that it’s a quick bread which means that it requires no yeast, or rising! The leavening of the bread comes from the baking soda, which is why it’s called “Soda Bread!”

This bread really reminds us of scones! The process is very similar to one another. Plus, we love the rustic look of it.

Step-By-Step Video:

The Key Ingredient:

Besides the baking soda, a key ingredient is… buttermilk! The buttermilk reacts with the baking soda, causing the bread to rise. Also, it adds an amazing flavor, which is crucial in Soda Bread.

We love serving the bread slightly warmed on it’s own. But some other ideas you could do are: spread on some butter, jam, or drizzle on some honey!

St. Patricks Day will be here before you know it, so plan on making this bread to celebrate!

Irish Soda Bread

Description

St. Patrick’s Day calls for this Irish Soda Bread! Soft, buttery, sweet and so good! It requires no yeast, and will leave your kitchen smelling like an Irish Bakery!

Ingredients

-4 cups all-purpose flour

-1/3 cup white sugar

-1 tsp. salt

-1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. baking soda

-1 cup raisins (optional)

-6 Tbsp. very cold cubed butter

-1 3/4 cups buttermilk

-1 large egg

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. You can bake it in multiple things. You can use a lined baking sheet, a 9-10 inch cake pan (lightly greased), or a 12-inch seasoned cast iron skillet.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup white sugar, and 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking powder, and 1 tsp. baking soda. Now add in 1 cup of raisins (optional), and mix.

3. To the dry ingredients add 6 Tbsp. very cold cubed butter, and break it up with a pastry cutter, or your hands until coarse crumbs.

4. Whisk together 1 3/4 cups of buttermilk with 1 large egg in a separate bowl.

5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing them until it comes together.

6. Transfer dough onto a floured surface, and knead until you see no more streaks of flour. Then shape the dough into a ball. Transfer to a cast iron skillet, a lined baking sheet, or a lightly greased cake pan.

7. Cut a cross in the middle of the bread and bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Then cover with foil, and bake for another 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

8. Once baking, transfer to a cooling rack and let the bread cool for 15 minutes before serving.

9. Enjoy!
