Spooky Black Velvet Cupcakes.

These Spooky Black Velvet Cupcakes are the only recipe you need to make for Halloween! They are moist, rich, chocolatey, and the black frosting and cupcake is so vibrant and pretty! The perfect treat to enjoy on a spooky Halloween evening.

We are obsessed with these cupcakes! Everything about them. The color, the black and orange sprinkles, and of course the taste! We think they would be so cute at a Halloween party, because they are so fun and festive!

What is Black Cocoa Powder?

The cupcakes and frosting get their color from black cocoa powder. Black cocoa powder is basically just cocoa powder that has been heavily dutch-processed, or alkalized. It has a beautiful deep almost black color. Add it to desserts like these black velvet cupcakes, for black color!

We frost the cupcakes with a black cream cheese whipped cream frosting, which is so good! If you guys know us, then you know how much we love this frosting and how we use it for all of our cakes and cupcakes!

Ingredients:

Flour: Flour is a basic ingredient in most cakes and cupcakes.

Sugar: For this recipe, we use white sugar.

Black Cocoa Powder: This recipe requires black cocoa powder. Regular or dutch process cocoa powder will not work.

Baking Powder: Baking powder makes the cupcakes rise.

Salt: Salt balances out the sweetness in the cupcakes.

Oil: Be sure to use vegetable oil, or any other flavorless oil.

Greek Yogurt: You can also use sour cream instead of greek yogurt.

Buttermilk: Buttermilk gives a subtle tangy flavor to the cupcakes, and activates with the baking powder for leavening.

Egg: Eggs are another basic ingredient in most cakes.

Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a nice flavor.

White Vinegar: White vinegar also helps active the baking soda, along with the buttermilk.

Hot Water: The batter is very thick, so adding hot water thins it out.

They are pretty straightforward too! Just whisk the dry ingredients, mix the wet ingredients, add them together, bake and decorate with your black whipped cream frosting!

Also, another thing we like about the cupcakes is you can decorate it any way you want! It’s all up to you. A classic is black and orange sprinkles (like we did), maybe some candy pumpkins, or be fancy and pipe on some halloween designs!

Here’s a few other recipes similar to this, that you may like!

Mummy Rice Krispie Treats: Rice Krispie Treats, but make them into adorable little mummies!

Lemon Lavender Cupcakes: These cupcakes have a citrusy lemon cake base, topped with a floral lavender frosting.

Pumpkin Spice Snack Cake: This cake is giving us ALL the Fall vibes and we are here for it!

Black Forest Cake: A rich and decadent chocolate cake with a juicy cherry filling and chocolate whipped cream.
