The Frosting:

If you know us, then you know that we use this Whipped Cream, Cream Cheese Frosting for basically everything, and it’s our absolute favorite! It’s light, fluffy, and slightly tangy from the cream cheese! And it’s made with only a handful of simple ingredients; Heavy Cream, Cream Cheese, Powdered Sugar, and Vanilla.

What exactly is Red Velvet Cake?

So we all know and love this classic cake flavor, but what exactly is Red Velvet? Common ingredients in this cake flavor are buttermilk, cocoa powder, vinegar, and red food coloring. So since Red Velvet has cocoa powder in it, it does make it somewhat of a chocolate cake, but it’s not as rich because there’s only 1 Tablespoon.

Ingredients:

Butter: Be sure your butter is room temperature, or it won’t beat very well.

Oil: Oil makes the cake moist.

Egg: Be sure the eggs are room temperature.

Vanilla Extract: For added flavor!

White Vinegar: A common Ingredient in Red Velvet cake. The Vinegar activates the baking soda, and helps to keep the red color while baking.

Cocoa Powder: Don’t use Dutch Process.

Baking Soda: Helps the cake rise.

Buttermilk: Buttermilk makes the cake moist, and light and fluffy.

Red Food Coloring: With the reactions in the cake with Vinegar, Buttermilk and the cocoa, the cake naturally turns a reddish tone, but the food coloring makes it more vibrant.

Flour, Eggs, Sugar & Salt: These ingredients are the base for any cake.

Description

This sweet little Red Velvet Cake with Mini Hearts is the perfect thing to make this St. Valentines Day! The crumb is velvety soft, lightly sweet, and moist! And paired with the whipped cream cream cheese frosting, it’s just irresistible!

Ingredients

For the Red Velvet Cake:

-1/4 cup softened butter

-3/4 cups white sugar

-1/3 cups vegetable oil

-1 large room temp. egg

-1 tsp. vanilla extract

-1 1/2 tsp. white vinegar

-1 1/4 cups all purpose flour

-1 Tbsp. cocoa powder, unsweetened

-1/2 tsp. baking soda

-1/4 tsp. salt

-1/2 cup buttermilk, room temp.

-1 1/2 tsp. red gel food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

-5 oz. cream cheese

-1 cup powdered sugar

-1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

-1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, beat together 1/4 cup softened butter until creamy. Once the butter is fluffed up, add in 3/4 cups white sugar. Beat that until combined, about 2 minutes.

2. Now add in 1/3 cups vegetable oil, 1 large room temp. egg, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, and 1 1/2 tsp. white vinegar. Beat that again, until everything is fully incorporated.

3. In a separate, small bowl, whisk together 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour, 1 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, and 1/4 tsp. salt.

4. Now to the wet ingredients, add in about 1/2 of the dry ingredients. Beat until combined. Pour in 1/2 cup buttermilk, and once fully mixed, add in the remaining dry ingredients.

5. To give it that signature red color, add in 1 1/2 tsp. of red gel food coloring. Beat that until the color is fully incorporated.

6. Evenly pour the batter into two 6 inch cake pans, greased and lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

7. While the cake is cooling, make the cream cheese frosting. In a medium sized bowl, with a hand mixer, whip together 5 0z. softened cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, and 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract. Now in a separate bowl, whip together 1 1/2 cups of heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Add the whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture and fold to combine. Save about 1/2 cup of the frosting, and dye it red.

8. Frost the cake with the frosting and pipe on mini red hearts! (or decorate however you’d like!)

  1. i’m gonna start with the good part: the actual cake turned out nice, but the icing was terrible! the icing was so watery and was inedible. next time i’m gonna use a different icing recipe. would not recommend
