Orange Spiced Sugar Plum Fairy Cupcakes!

These Sugar Plum Fairy Cupcakes are the cutest Christmas cupcakes that you NEED to try this Holiday season! Each one consists of a soft orange spiced cupcake swirled with an amazingly fluffy whipped cream frosting. Lastly, we topped it off with a sugar cookie and sweet candies!

We got the idea for these cupcakes from Sally’s Baking Addiction. Her cupcakes were absolutely adorable, so we decided to make it also, with our own little twist on it!

These cupcakes are actually pretty simple to make too! We love them because all you have to do is make the batter, and bake the cupcakes. Then just make the really simple frosting and pipe on top of the cupcakes! Finally, just top them with your favorite candies. It’s that easy!

Ingredients:

Flour: This recipe just uses all-purpose flour.

Sugar: Just use regular white sugar.

Baking Powder + Soda: These are the leavening ingredients, which make the cupcakes rise.

Salt: Salt balances out the sweetness in the cupcakes!

Milk: We recommend using whole milk!

Orange Juice + Zest: Use fresh orange juice and zest!

Oil: Use a flavorless oil. We use vegetable oil.

Vinegar: Use white vinegar.

Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract adds a nice flavor to the cupcakes.

The Frosting:

This is our absolute favorite frosting for all of our cakes and cupcakes! It’s soft, fluffy, and tastes amazing. We also love how you can make this frosting pretty much any flavor. But in this case, we decided to keep it simple, and have the orange cupcake be the main flavor!

We topped our cupcakes with a snowflake sugar cookie, a gumdrop, sprinkles, licorice and an orange slice! But of course, you can top it with your favorite candies.

Ingredients

Units Scale

For Orange Spiced Cupcakes:

1 + 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

2 Tbsp. fresh orange zest

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/4 tsp. salt

3/4 cup milk

1/2 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed

1/2 cup oil

1 tsp. white vinegar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

For Whipped Cream Frosting:

4 oz. cream cheese, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

purple food dye, optional

1 + 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

sprinkles and candy, for topping

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350F and line a cupcake tin with 12 cupcake liners.

2. To make the orange-infused sugar, in a small bowl, mix together 1 cup white sugar and 2 Tbsp. fresh orange zest. Now with your hands, blend the orange zest into the sugar.

3. To a small bowl, add in 1 + 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, the orange infused sugar, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda, and 1/4 tsp. salt. Whisk that until combined, then set aside.

4. To a medium-sized bowl, add 3/4 cup milk, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup oil, 1 tsp. white vinegar, and 1 tsp. vanilla extract.

5. Whisk that until combined, then add in the dry ingredients. Whisk that once more until your batter is smooth.

6. Evenly scoop the batter into your cupcake liners, and bake at 350F for 12-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

7. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.

8. While the cupcakes are cooling, make the frosting. With an electric hand mixer, beat together 4 oz. softened cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, and purple food dye. Beat that until combined, then set aside.

9. In a separate bowl, whip up 1 + 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream until stiff peaks form.

10. Add the whipped cream to the cream cheese mixture. Fold until fully combined.

11. Now, pipe the frosting onto your cooled cupcakes and add on some sprinkles and candy! We also topped ours with a snowflake sugar cookie.

12. Enjoy!
